Beat Pokemon Red No Starter No Legendary

I was able to beat the game.  I beat the game in 23 hours and 14 minutes.

I was inspired by Twitch plays pokemon.  I wanted to see if I could beat Pokemon Red Blue without using a Starter pokemon or a legendary.  Normally when i play I want to use Blastoise or Charizard and then also use Snorlax as well as Zapdos.  Once you get Zapdos the game becomes very easy because you can use Fly and Drill Peck as well as Thunderbolt and that beats SO many pokemon because Zapdos has good stats as well.

So I wanted to see if I could make it through the game without using “good pokemon” I wanted to use pokemon that were “just okay”

When I made it to the Elite Four I wanted to see if I could beat them without using any items to see how my team compared.  I lost to my rival who I named “Gary” I was able to get to his GYRADOS.  (I also like to use Gyrados because it is OP, but my team did not have Gyrados).  I was able to make it to the rival but not beat him on my try and I did not use any items.  My main pokemon was a CLEFABLE, a KADABRA, a VAPOREON, and a Pidgeot.  I also had a low level Nidoking and a low level Omanyte (in tribute to Lord Helix) from Twitch.    Before I went back to try again I wanted to get TM 15 Hyper Beam for Kadabra but I did not have enough money and/or coins in order to get it.

I was basically ready to try again, this time I would use healing items.

On my second time through, I was able to beat the Champion!

My team to win the game was:

Clefable level 68   -Tri Attack, BubbleBeam, Thunderbolt, Metronome

Vaporeon level 48 – Ice Beam and Surf

Kadabra level 56 – Psybeam and Psychic and Recover

Pigeot level 45 – Fly, wing attack, quick attack

Nidoking level 31 – Strength, Thrash

Omanyte level 32  – Water Gun

The AI of the game is not that smart, it doesn’t really take advantage of chances to kill you, which I guess is why TWITCH could win with the Venomoth against Dragonite.  Having my Clefable know TRI ATTACK and Bubblebeam was very important.  Also, Vaporeon with Surf and Ice Beam was important.  And Kadabra is strong.

You can definitely beat the game without using a Starter and you don’t need any Legendaries to win.  You just need some “medium” tier pokemon and good use of the TMS.

(I will admit that Kadabra is a pretty strong pokemon, the game would be tougher if I could not use Kadabra … )

Thank you to all my fans and supporters!

An Opinion on Pokemon Red and Blue (Gen 1)

The game is a good game because there is some difficulty and you need to keep on leveling up your pokemon.

However, the game can become too easy if you use overpowered Pokemon.   For example: Charizard and Blastoise are strong, being able to use Flamethrower or teaching Blastoise Ice Beam and Surf make the game relatively easy.

Also, catching Snorlax and then using him makes the game easy as well because Snorlax has great HP stats and attack power.

Also, catching Zapdos at the Power Plant then makes the game very easy as you can teach Zapdos ThunderBolt and Fly, which makes it Overpowered.

Also, if you decide to get a Gyrados early on then the game becomes easy due to Gyrados having such a high attack stat.

The game truly has a challenge to it when you choose to use Pokemon that are less strong, pokemon who are not really “game winners” like a Blastoise-Zapdos combination.

Pokemon Red/Blue are Still BadAss (Yes.)

Red and Blue are packed full of Badass-ness.   There is no doubt.

Like that Rival battle theme (the final battle)! YES!   When that theme was playing you were thinking “This is some REAL shit happening right here!”     The music in the Pokemon Mansion — you are thinking “WOAH!  This is kind of techno-y WOAH!    oh shit I just picked up Solarbeam! YES!”

And then there is the Gym Leader Battle Music!   YES!    Orgasmically intense!   Everyone is thinking the same thing: “’bout to get one more badge playa!”     “HA HA HA foolish Erica, I picked Charizard — burn burn burn burn burn GAME OVER!”

And those designs!   Pikachu was a little chubby, and Raichu was a HUGE fatty!  Muk and Weezing looked exactly the way they should!   Mr. Mime was a Pokemon you don’t let near your children (“uh oh I’m about to touch something!”).    In Red/Blue Rhyhorn looked pretty derpy.     Mewtwo was a straight up Alien.   Arbok was HUGE!    Gloom was drooling.   And DRAGONITE just looked strange!    He is supposed to be a total badass, which is why you leveled up that Dratini…. and then he looks ultra derpy!        But DRAGONAIR is looking GOOD!     GENGAR, ALAKAZAM, BLASTOISE, and MACHAMP!   They all look great!

The game has an awesome soundtrack!    There are some game-changing moments.   Like if you catch that Dugtrio in the cave, you just gained an instant strong pokemon that can crush Lt. Surge!      You get the eevee and BOOM!   Flareon or Jolteon!     Once you stumble upon Zapdos in the Power Plant, OMG you can get rid of your electric type and flying type because Zapdos is a BEAST!

The game simply has a high level of “coolness.”   Your rival was tough (and an asshole  [especially for showing up when you get out of Dark Cave WTF?!?!]).    It has a definite sense of adventure and discovery.   AND the Elite Four was HARD!   Their pokemon were all high level and your Rival has a Level 70 Blastoise (big shift from the sequel GOLD where the Elite Four maxes out at 50).   Be SURE to get Ice Beam so you have a chance at beating LANCE (he has that cape).

HIGHLY RECOMMEND you check out the original pokemon games.   They are badass and they are CLASSIC!   gotta catch em’ all!
